The Untouchables

All the versions of this article: [English] [français]

The Untouchables, or « dalits » ("the broken ones", « cast away », « rejected »), are the most deprived ones in the Hindu cast system. Although a number of them manage to get a good education, they are in general very poor, in the lower part of the social ladder and facing many problems : oppression and abuses by caste people, domestic violence, alcoholism, insecure jobs, heavy or hard labor, illiteracy or low education, poor health, etc.
